Oats Ladoo is a healthy and nutritious ladoo recipe that comes together in no time. These ladoos are made with oats, walnuts and sweetened with dates and maple syrup. These are the easiest, healthy festive snack to add to your festive mithai box.
Besides being a festive treat, these make a delicious snack that my toddler enjoys all year round. These are packed with protein & fiber from oats, omega-3s & fats from walnuts. These healthy ladoos give you a boost when you are feeling low on energy. All you need is 7 ingredients and 30 minutes to make these delicious ladoos.
This recipe is very forgiving, you can play around with the ingredients as per you liking. I have added cocoa powder for a deep chocolate flavor but you can skip it completely. Feel free to adjust the sweetness level based on your liking. If you don’t like walnuts substitute with almonds or cashews. Make sure to use a high speed blender or a food processor to blend the ingredients.
Ingredients:
Oats: I have used old fashioned rolled oats to make the flour for ladoos. I generally buy sprouted rolled oats from Costco as they are easy to digest and are slightly sweeter in taste. Alternatively, you can use quick cooking oats or instant oats to make your oat flour.
Walnuts: I have toasted raw walnuts before adding it to the ladoos. Toasting enhances the flavor of walnuts. Make sure you toast the walnuts for a nutty flavor. The walnuts can be substituted with cashews and almonds.
Pitted Dates: I have used Deglet Noor pitted dates in this recipe. Deglet are not overtly sweet and have a little nutty flavor. Plus they hold the texture nicely when blended with other ingredients. Alternatively, you can use Medjool Dates, they are easily available in the grocery stores. Medjool dates have maple flavor and are luscious in texture. Whatever variety you use make sure the dates are nice and soft & not dry.
Cardamom Powder: Addition of cardamom powder gives a distinct piney and fruity flavor to this recipe.
Nutmeg Powder: Addition of nutmeg powder gives a distinct warm, nutty flavor to these ladoos. I have used store bought nutmeg powder for convenience.
Cocoa Powder: I have used unsweetened cocoa powder to add deep chocolate flavor to this recipe.
Maple Syrup: To balance out the slight bitter flavors from walnuts and cocoa powder, I have added maple syrup for a touch of extra sweetness and helps bind everything together. Alternatively, you can use your favorite liquid sweetener – for example, honey or agave syrup. To make this recipe refined sugar free add skip the maple syrup and add water to help bind everything togerher.
Preparing the ingredients to make oat ladoo:
How to make oat flour:
You can make oat flour in advance and save it to use later. In a high speed blender add the toasted oats and blend until the oats turn into a fine powder. It takes about 20 seconds to 1 minute. You can store the oat flour in an airtight container upto 3 months. 1 cup old fashioned or instant oats yields 1 cup flour.
How to toast Walnuts:
You can toast the walnuts in two ways:
Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the walnuts in a single layer. Toast until nicely browned and fragrant. It takes about 7-10 minutes. Remove from the oven, let them completely cool down before you add it to the blender.
Stove Top: Toss the walnuts in a skillet over a medium heat. Toast the walnuts until browned and fragrant, stirring occasionally. It takes about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven, let the walnuts completely cool down before you add it to the blender..
How to Make Oats Ladoo ?
Start by dry roasting oats in the oven or on stove top. Transfer it on a plate and allow to cool down. Secondly, dry roast walnuts until they are fragrant. Transfer them on a plate, allow to cool down completely.
Once the oats are cooled down add them to a blender to form a fine powder. If you don’t have a high speed blender the powder will be coarse in texture which works just as fine .In a high speed blender add walnuts, cocoa powder, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, dates and maple syrup. Blend together until you get a coarse powder.
Scoop out the mixture, using a ice-cream scoop and roll it into ladoos.
How to store ladoo ?
Store the ladoos in an airtight container. They keep well at room temperature upto a week. Alternatively, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 10 days.
