Oats Chivda is an Indian savory trail mix made using roasted rolled oats, nuts, spices, chilis and curry leaves. This is a healthier version of the traditional chivda recipe. This gluten free oats chivda is a great option to enjoy with some tea time snack or as a Diwali snack.

Traditionally, chivda is an Indian snack made using flattened rice (poha) or puffed rice. Today, I am sharing this oats chivda version where I have replaced poha with gluten free rolled oats. I have added nuts for the crunch, but you can add seeds if you like. What I love about this recipe is you can customize it as per your preference.

I love pairing this chivda, which is nothing but a savory trail mix, with my evening green tea. If you are on a healthy eating kick then look no further and make a jarful of this delicious oats chivda this festive season. I have shared a small batch recipe but you can easily double or triple the ingredients to make a big batch. This oats chivda stores well in an airtight container upto 2 months.

Ingredients To Make Oats Chivda Recipe:

  • Rolled Oats: I have used gluten free old fashioned rolled oats in this recipe. Alternatively, you can use quick/instant oats. I generally buy sprouted oats from Costco as they are easy to digest and are slightly sweeter in taste. • For Tempering : Oil, mustard seeds, green chilies, asafoetida, curry leaves.
  • Nuts & Roasted Chana Dal: I have used raw peanuts & cashews for the crunch. I add golden raisins as it adds sweetness to the chivda. I have also added roasted split chickpeas known as ‘dale’ in Marathi, typically all the chivda preparations have roasted chana dal in it.
  • Spice Powders: I have added turmeric powder, red chili powder, black pepper powder to spice up the chivda. Also, I have added chaat masala & black salt for a tangy taste. Alternatively, you can use amchur powder (dry mango powder) or citric acid.
  • Sugar: You can add powdered sugar to balance out the flavors in this chivda but its optional. I prefer adding raisins for the sweetness.

How to make Oats Chivda:

  • Roasting Oats: Dry roast oats on a medium low heat, until they turn golden. Transfer on a plate and set aside.
  • Make the Tempering: In the same pan heat oil, add mustard seeds, let them splutter. Next, add curry leaves & green chilies, let it sizzle. Add cashews, chana dal & peanuts and roast for a minute. Add turmeric powder, asafoetida, chili powder, black pepper powder. Reduce the heat to low.
  • Mixing The Oats Mixture: Now add the roasted oats to the pan along with raisins. Season with chaat masala, black salt and powdered sugar. Mix well. Switch off the flame. Remove and transfer the chivda onto a plate.
  • Storage and Serving: Allow the Oats Chivda to cool at room temperature and then store it in an air-tight container for up to 2 months. Since this a small batch recipe I bet it will over in less than 5 days. Serve the chivda as a tea time snack or Diwali snack.

Prepping the Oats and Nuts in oven:

You can even roast the oats and nuts in the oven. Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Place oats, cashews, peanuts and chana dal on a baking tray. Roast for 15 minutes or until fragrant. Transfer the mixture on a plate and then make the tempering.

Variations:

  • You can use seed mix like pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds instead of nuts. I have added cashews & peanuts for the crunch, feel free to add almonds if you like.
  • You can add puffed rice, corn flakes or flattened rice in this recipe along with oats.
