This whole wheat waffle recipe is quick to make from scratch and is perfect to make for the weekend brunch. This recipe uses pantry and fridge staple ingredients and comes together in one bowl. Since these are made from whole wheat flour they are healthier too.
These whole wheat waffles turn out exactly how they should be – light and crispy on the outside, while remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. The top two reasons why I love making these waffles are – firstly, you can make the batter the night before. Secondly, you can freeze these waffles for busy mornings.
My daughter is in a phase where she loves to eat everything in a form of a waffle. Hence we end up making this recipe quite often. I hope this whole wheat waffle recipe becomes a staple in your kitchen too.
Ingredients to make this whole wheat waffle recipe:
Whole wheat Flour: is the base ingredient for this recipe. I use Aashirvaad Whole Wheat Flour
Maple Syrup: Adds sweetness to the waffles. Alternatively, you can use jaggery or granulated sugar.
Baking Powder: Helps the waffle rise and achieve fluffy texture.
Milk: I use full fat milk.
Ghee: I use melted ghee to brush the waffle iron. Alternatively, you can use melted butter or oil spray.
Egg: Addition of egg creates a rich, tender waffle. I recommend using eggs at room temperature so it gets easily incorporated into the batter.
Vanilla Extract: Adds so much flavor and scent to the waffles.
Salt: Just a pinch of it brings out the flavors.
Equipment & Tools you will need to make these waffles:
Waffle Iron: I use this mini waffle iron for this recipe.
How to make this Waffle Recipe:
Beat egg, melted ghee, milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract until well combined.
Add dry ingredients – in a bowl stir together flour, baking powder, salt, combine well. Add to the above egg mixture.
Beat the batter on low speed until well combined. Make sure don’t overmix.
Preheat the waffle iron, then spray lightly with cooking spray or brush it with ghee.
Pour a ladleful to fill the grooves. Cook until the waffles crisp up. Serve with all your favorite toppings.
How to store & reheat whole wheat waffles:
Cool the waffles on a wire rack then transfer to an airtight container or zip lock bag and freeze until ready to use. Reheat the waffle from frozen in a toaster, air fryer or oven.
