Serves: 40 diamond shaped crackers

Methi Crackers is a light, crispy and delicious snacks. These oat crackers are gluten-free and flavored with dried fenugreek leaves and spices. These pair well will a hot cup of tea or coffee.

This recipe is inspired by traditional Indian snack ‘Methi Mathri’. The traditional recipe uses all purpose flour and mathri is deep fried. My recipe is a healthier alternative to the traditional recipe as it’s gluten free and baked. This cracker recipe requires handful ingredients, is gluten free and vegan. To flavor these crackers, I added a generous amount of dried fenugreek leaves, carom seeds, chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. I have also added sugar to balance the flavors. This recipe is very forgiving, you can flavor the crackers according to your taste.

I am a snacker and so is my toddler. Crackers are our favorite snacks. What I love about this recipe is that it’s really easy and requires no time at all to whip up a batch. I generally make them with the help of my toddler. If you are looking for snacks to binge on without any guilt then give this recipe a go.

Ingredients To Make Methi Crackers:

Oat Flour: Make your own oat flour if you don’t have oat flour handy. Simply grind the oats in a high speed blender until powder is formed.

Flax Flour: The flax flour adds heathy fats, fiber to the crackers and helps bind them together. To make a flax flour simply process them in a blender until a powder is formed.

Spices: I have used dried fenugreek leaves, turmeric powder, chili powder, salt, sugar and carom seeds to flavor the crackers. This base recipe can be dressed up in so many different ways, I will share a few more versions soon.

Water: Water moistens the dough and brings the crackers together.

Oil: I have used olive oil as it imparts a wonderful flavor and texture to the crackers. Alternatively, you can use any neutral oil of your choice. You can also use melted ghee or butter. Make sure you are not reducing the amount of oil you add to the dough as right amount of oil is a must to get the right texture.

Sesame Seeds: I have used a combination of black and white sesame seeds to embed into the crackers.

How to make Methi Oat Crackers:

Mix the oat flour, flax flour, and spices in a bowl.

Add the water and olive oil and stir to combine

Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 6-8 minutes to thicken. Make sure to not to leave it for more than 8 minutes, it will be very thick.

Preheat the oven at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) and cut two pieces of parchment paper to line baking sheet.

Line one piece of parchment paper on work surface, I used rectangular chopping board as my work surface. Place the dough onto the paper.

Place the second sheet of parchment paper on the top and flatten it gently with your hands. Try and spread the dough evenly with your hands. Once the dough is evenly spread between the sheets, smooth the top of the crackers gently with a rolling pin.

Transfer the rolled dough onto the baking sheet and remove the top layer of parchment paper.

Sprinkle some sesame seeds on the fattened cracker dough. Press the seeds very gently into the dough.

Cut the cracker dough into diamond shape or any desired shape with a pizza cutter or a sharp knife. Bake the crackers for 30-35 minutes.

Remove the crackers from the oven and place the baking sheet on a cooling rack.

Enjoy the crackers as a snack during your tea time.

Notes

I have used olive oil as it imparts rich flavor to the crackers, however you can any neutral oil of your choice. You can even use melted ghee or butter if you don’t mind dairy.

Please note that if you roll the crackers thick, they will take more time to bake.

I have simply sprinkled and gently pressed the sesame seeds in the cracker dough. Alternatively, you can use a rolling pin to roll the seeds gently into the dough.

These crackers keep well in an air tight container at room temperature for upto two-three weeks. You can even make a big batch and store it in a freezer in an air tight container for upto a month.

These crackers are gluten free so they are a bit crumbly in texture.
