Gudi Padwa Recipes

Gudi Padwa is a Maharashtrian festival celebrated to welcome the onset of spring. Padwa falls on the first day of Chaitra month according to the lunisolar Hindu Calendar. It falls on the day on which the moon appears after new moon day (Amavasya) . It marks the beginning of the New Year for many Hindus. The mythological story behind festival is that it is believed that many years ago there was a great deluge on Earth. Time had stopped and every living being and every aspect of nature was destroyed. It is said that on this day Lord Brahma started to create a New World. On Gudi Padwa time started again hence it is celebrated as a New Year.

I have very fond & vivid memories of celebrating Gudi Padwa. I have noticed all these memories are connected with food. Just taste of Shrikhanda, smell of Masale Bhaat evocates and brings back memories of not just eating food itself but also the of place and setting. Food is definitely an effective trigger of memories, feelings and emotions.

Gudi Padwa is certainly incomplete without making a delicious spread/ thali as a naivedya for gudi. A typical padwa thai includes classic Maharashtrian Recipes. Today I am sharing a round up of my favorite festive Maharashtrian recipe to bring oin Gudi Padwa.
