Oat Flour is basically ground oats. This flour is nutritious, high in fiber, plant based protein flour. It’s a healthy substitute for all purpose flour, plus it’s ridiculously easy to make at home. You can use old fashioned oats or quick cooking oats to make this easy flour at home. I always have a jarful in my pantry as its extremely versatile. I make healthy pancakes sweet & savory, waffles, muffins, creamy overnight oats and even idlis. You can even add this flour as a binding agent to Asian recipes.
What kind of oats should I use
The best type of oats to make this flour is old fashioned rolled oats. I use Sprouted Organic Rolled Oats from Costco & it yields light and fluffy flour. You can use steel cut oats but it results in grittier flour if you don’t use high speed blender.
How To Make Oat Flour
Oat Flour is certainly the easiest thing I have ever made. Here’s how to make it:
Sauté 2 cups rolled oats in a skillet on medium heat, shaking and tossing frequently until they start to turn golden brown and smell toasty and nutty.
Allow them to cool down. Place 2 cups of oats in a food processor or high speed blender. Blend for several minutes until a fine flour forms. 1 cup of rolled oats yields 1 cup oat flour. This recipe yields 2 cups of flour.
Store the flour in an air tight container up to 3 months.
