Easy Tofu Recipe

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Serves: 3

This easy tofu satay recipe is perfect for the summer grill season. Tofu Satay with peanut sauce is hands down our favorite way to eat tofu. Traditionally tofu is marinated in peanut sauce but this easy tofu recipe gives marination a pass and calls for adding the sauce to the griddle while its been grilled. This easy tofu recipe makes a perfect starter or even a main dish with some rice, sauce for cold noodles or base for ramen.

Ingredients & Substitutes

Tofu: Extra firm tofu works extremely well for this recipe as it doesn’t stick to pan while shallow frying. If you aren’t a fan of tofu feel free to use paneer, soy chunks or chicken.

Coconut Milk: Full fat coconut milk gives a lovely texture and flavor to the peanut sauce but you can add light coconut milk if you desire.

Lime juice: freshly squeezed lime juices gives a hint of tanginess to the sauce but you can substitute lime juice with lemon juice or white wine vinegar.

Honey: or brown sugar, maple syrup, coconut sugar

Coconut aminos, or soy sauce. If using dark soy sauce adjust the amount as it is saltier.

Peanut butter: I like to use smooth creamy unsalted peanut butter. I have tried using almond butter and it tastes just as good.

Sriracha sauce: or chili paste, crushed chili flakes, chili powder, cayenne pepper.

How to press tofu?

Refer to the notes section, below

Method:

Grill: I have used a cast iron griddle to grill the tofu. Tofu tends to stick to the grill so prepare your barbecue by rubbing the oil before grilling.

Or

Bake: Baking them in the oven at 400F for 35 minutes is the fuss free method.

Once you have your tofu prepared this easy tofu recipe comes together in no time as all you need to do is combine the ingredients for the peanut sauce and just pour it over the grilled tofu.

How to serve Tofu Stay:

Tofu Satay is normally served as an appetizer but this peanut sauce is quite dense in texture and nutrition. As a result, it makes a great base for any main dish such as cold noodles, curry ramen or rice.

  • 1 tbsp Sriracha
  • 1 clove Garlic , grated
  • 2 tsp Lime juice
  • 1 tbsp Honey , or 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • to taste Salt

Fried Tofu

  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1 block Firm tofu
  • 2 tsp pepper , pounded
  • to taste salt

For Plating

  • 2 cups Shredded Lettuce
  • 1 tsp Everything but bagel seasoning , or black sesame seeds
  • 3 tsp Crushed Peanuts

Instructions

  • 1)

Prepare your tofu by removing the excess water (refer to the notes section to know how to press tofu without a press).  Cut the tofu in desired shape. I like to cut it along the length.

  • 2)

In a bowl add all the ingredients mentioned under the list peanut sauce. Whisk everything well until it is all combined into a sauce. If your sauce is too thick add a splash of water to get the desired consistency.

  • 3)

Season the tofu with salt & pepper. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a large skillet and sear for 5-6 minutes flipping sides or until a golden crust starts to form.

  • 4)

Next add half the quantity of the peanut sauce to the seared tofu and further sear until the tofu is well coated with the sauce.

  • 5)

Transfer the tofu on a plate, let it cool down before skewing them on a satay stick.

  • 6)

Now for the plating, add the washed shredded lettuce in a serving plate. Place the tofu skewers on the bed of lettuce. Serve it along with the saved peanut sauce. Garnish the sauce with chili flakes, crushed peanuts & everything but bagel seasoning.

Notes

How to press tofu without a tofu press?

  1. Open the package of tofu, dispose the liquid and gently remove the tofu block .
  2. Take the plastic tofu package invert it and make slits on it with a knife. Place this package on a plate.
  3. Place the block of tofu on the package. Place a few cutting boards on the top of tofu, balancing it so that it stays on the top. Weigh the boards down with a few board books or similar weighing objects.
  4. Wait for about 30 minutes for the liquid to press out of the block of tofu.
  5. Once the tofu has been pressed, remove the weighted objects and wrap the block with paper towels to absorb the remaining liquid.

Tips:

Choose extra firm tofu & press your tofu very well before grilling.

Keep the pieces you want to grill relatively big. Tofu is delicate & smaller pieces may break or fall through the grill grates.

Tofu tends to to stick to grills because it is lower in fat content compared to meat, so prepare your barbecue by rubbing it with oil before grilling.
